The Genetics and Neurochemistry of Schizophrenia and Addiction: Enhanced Options for Treatment Using Nicotinic Acid (Vitamin B3)
نویسنده
چکیده
e role of oxidative stress has been reviewed in a variety of psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia and alcoholism (index cases), which are associated with de"ciency of protective enzymes: superoxide dismutase and catalase, respectively. !e reported e#ectiveness of nicotinic acid in the treatment of schizophrenia and alcoholism appears to be due to enhanced levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), thereby opposing the deleterious e#ects of genetically determined neuronal oxidative stress, arguably an important "nal common pathway in schizophrenia and alcoholism. !e potential for nicotinic acid supplementation to remit schizotypy (schizoid traits) in family members containing an index case has been proposed and such a case is described. !is report hints at the potential role of nicotinic acid in remitting an array of psychiatric disorders linked genetically and biochemically to schizophrenia. 1 Email: [email protected]

Effect of Olanzapine and Risperidone on Oxidative Stress in Schizophrenia Patients
Oxidative stress has been suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Increased oxidative stress is the result of either an increased production of free radicals or a depletion of the endogenous antioxidants. However, whether this imbalance of oxidant-antioxidant status in schizophrenia is integral to disease itself or the effect of antipsychotic drugs is not clearly unders...
متن کاملStudy of the association between DRD2 Gene Ser311Cys and GSTM1 Gene polymorphism in Schizophrenia
Introduction: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder affecting 1% of the world's population. Two of genes have been recognized to be involved in development of this disease: DRD2 and GSTM1. Methods: This case-control study included 100 patients suffering from schizophrenia who referred to Yazd Neuropsychiatry Hospital. Also, 100 healthy patients without schizophrenia were selected as the control g...
متن کاملEvaluation of the efficacy and safety of pregabalin as an adjuvant to antipsychotics in patients with chronic schizophrenia: a six-week pilot double-blind placebo-controlled trial
Introduction and objectives: Antipsychotics or dopamine receptor antagonists are the major components of treatment but about 10-20% of patients with schizophrenia do not benefit from treatment with antidopaminergic agents, indicating other neuronal systems may be involved in this disorder (2). Dysregulation of both excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and γ-Amino...
متن کاملEvaluating the Efficacy of Vitamin D Add-on Therapy on Treatment of Positive, Negative and Cognitive Symptoms in Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia; A Double Blind Clinical Trial
Background: Vitamin D can be effective in treating some symptoms of schizophrenia, and with better control of vitamin D levels and supplementation, there is a potential for reducing this disease. But due to small number of studies, more studies are needed in this area. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of vitamin D as an adjunct to the positive, negative, and cognitive symptom...
متن کاملEffects of B Vitamins Overload on Plasma Insulin Level and Hydrogen Peroxide Generation in Rats.
It has been reported that nicotinamide-overload induces oxidative stress associated with insulin resistance, the key feature of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to investigate the effects of B vitamins in T2DM. Glucose tolerance tests were carried out in adult Sprague-Dawley rats treated with or without cumulative doses of B vitamins. More specifically, insulin tolerance tests ...
